BURGLARS were able to steal cash and a phone thanks to an unlocked door.

Middlewich Police are urging residents to take care following a burglary in the town.

Officers were called to Wheelock Street at 5.20pm on Friday (February 23) after reports that an unknown person had entered a property via an unlocked door.

The caller reported that this had happened some time between 6pm and 9.40pm the previous day.

Once inside the building, the suspect went upstairs and stole a mobile and quantity of cash.

Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact Cheshire Police by calling 101 and quoting IML 1763458.

In the meantime, Middlewich Police have offered advice on how residents can protect their homes.

“Lock your windows and doors before going out,” a post on the local policing team’s Facebook page reads.

“Keep all valuables like jewellery, electronics and other high-value items out of sight.

“Consider installing a security alarm, CCTV and outdoor lights as these often act as a deterrent.

“Store keys such as another set of house keys or car keys away from windows, doors and letterboxes to deter thieves from 'fishing'.

“If you see any suspicious activity or you need to make a report, please report it online - www.cheshire.police.uk/ro/report/. Always call 999 in an emergency.”
