WOMEN in Winsford are coming together to celebrate ‘all that’s great and good about womankind’ this spring.

The town’s International Women’s Day event, held at Winsford Lifestyles Centre on Saturday, March 16, has a ‘women of words’ theme, with singers and performers throughout the day highlighting their contribution to literature, music, and drama.

Organised by women’s health and wellbeing charity, Motherwell Cheshire, the free event includes stalls and displays showcasing opportunities to get involved in a new sport or hobby, and to make new friends.

There’ll also be retailers selling health and beauty products, flowers, handbags, candles, crystals, clay art, crafts, and gifts.

Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire, Lady Alexis Redmond MBE, will open the event and meet the many local organisations taking part.

Sir Phil Redmond, creator of TV hits including Brookside, Hollyoaks, and Grange Hill, will also be attending.

Motherwell Cheshire founder, Kate Blakemore, says the day looks set to be another crowd-puller after a great response from community groups, charities, and sponsors.

She added: “International Women’s Day has become a really popular date on the local social calendar and we're thrilled to welcome Alexis and Phil who take a keen interest in our work to support women and girls.

“The event attracts a great many stallholders and families who like to enjoy the day and is a true celebration of all that’s great and good about womankind.

“Excitement is building with a full programme and more attractions to be added. We’ll update our social media as the weeks go on.”

International Women’s Day, which always falls on March 8, has been celebrated annually for more than 100 years to recognise the social, cultural, and political achievements of women worldwide.

The day also provides a focus for serious issues facing women such as gender inequality, reproductive rights, and violence against woman and girls.

Kate added: “It was always my ambition to make International Women’s Day a special event in Winsford.

“We’re also inviting business to show their support by becoming sponsors, with a range of opportunities starting from £50, which includes a banner to display on social media.”
