TATA Chemicals Europe has explained why one of its plants has been making so much noise.

Northwich residents may have noticed a loud, rumbling, sound coming from the site in Lostock Gralam.

The firm, which manufactures salt, soda ash and sodium bicarbonate, says this is a result of the recent bad weather.

A TCE spokesman said: "Since late last year, there has been an exceptional level of rainfall which unfortunately has led to a lot of flooding across Northwich.

“Our steam pipelines run from Winnington to Lostock and, during periods of flooding, we have to take extra precautions to ensure that the steam does not cool and condense in the pipelines.

“As a result, we have to increase the volume and temperature of the steam meaning the surplus steam arriving at Lostock then needs to be vented.

“This temporary process, unfortunately, has resulted in additional noise in this period and for that, we would like to extend our thanks to the local community for their patience.

“We absolutely try to minimise the need for venting steam whenever possible for this very reason and because this process is not a cost-effective way to operate.”

TCE anticipate that this issue will be 'largely resolved soon', with a drier forecast on the cards.

When such a time comes, the plant will be able to return to its normal operating procedures.
