A re-opening date has been confirmed as work continues on the A556.

The main road into Northwich has been shut since a sinkhole opened up nearly two weeks ago.

Now Cheshire West and Chester has provided an update on the situation, with the road set to reopen on Tuesday (September 19).

Deputy leader of the council Karen Shore said: “This closure is causing significant disruption for residents, businesses, and commuters.

"This has proved to be a complex repair requiring work offsite.

"I’m pleased to say our contractors are working day and night shifts now that they can work on site."

As a deep excavation is required, a temporary works plan has been designed, ensuring that workmen can operate safely and will be protected against a potential trench collapse.

As part of this, work has continued off site with a trench box being assembled

However, as excavations will have to take place in the central reservation in order to repair the collapsed drain, the eastbound lane will need to be closed.

This closure came into place today (September 15) and work on a replacement barrier will begin tonight.

Councillor Shore adde: “Whilst the closure has been in place, we have arranged several maintenance activities.

"These have included gully cleansing, barrier repairs, carriageway repairs, re-lining of the road markings, replacement of a lighting column and illuminated sign.”

A signed diversion route is in place using A559 Manchester Road, A533 Kingsmead and A556 Shurlach Road.
