WORK to improve the access to a Northwich church can now begin after plans were given the green light by the council.

The Parochial Church Council submitted a planning application to Cheshire West and Chester Council to the eastern gateway of St Helen's Church.

The current gate off Church Road does not meet the minimum requirements for fire engine access.

It is proposed the opening and access road will be widened by 40cm to comply with the requirements.

A separate pedestrian access gate and path is also planned to allow the vehicle gate to be locked at night.

A design and access statement, prepared by Landscape Projects on behalf of the applicant, said: "St Helen's Church provides a thriving community service, making provision for a large parish with a wide range of residents, and performing the role of the parish church of Northwich.

"In order to continue to provide these services, it is necessary for improved access to the church, including provision for emergency vehicle access, therefore the church seeks to widen the existing access road, gateway and provide a separate pedestrian access route within the church grounds."
