TWO pubs in Northwich and Winsford are to cut food and drink prices for a day to highlight the benefit of permanent VAT reduction in the hospitality industry.

The Penny Black in Witton Street and The Queens Arms in Dene Drive will be joining other Wetherspoon pubs in cutting their prices to mark Tax Equality Day.

This coming Thursday, September 15, the two pubs will be reducing their prices by 7.5 per cent, meaning a customer spending £10 will only pay £9.25.

Emily Bailey, manager at The Queens Arms, said it was 'unfair' food and drink in pubs is subject to 20 per cent VAT while supermarkets pay no VAT on food and offer alcohol at discounted prices.

She said: "It is unfair that supermarkets pay zero VAT on food, but pubs pay 20 per cent.

"Pubs have been under fantastic pressure for decades due to the tax disadvantages it has with supermarkets.

"It doesn't make sense for the hospitality industry to subsidise supermarkets.

"Customers coming to The Queens Arms on Thursday, September 15, will find the price of their food and drink is lower than normal.

"We urge the Chancellor to create tax equality between pubs and supermarkets."
