AN INVESTIGATION will take place into the cause of a fire at Winsford Cross Shopping Centre today, Saturday.

At around 11am, five fire engines were called to the commercial building in Dene Drive, where crews found a fire on the first floor of a unit in a shopping centre and alarms were activated.

The fire – located in unit 34 - had spread to a nearby unit and firefighters tackled the blaze with hose reels and an aerial ladder.

The shopping centre was evacuated while the incident was being dealt with and a cordon was set up for safety.

All persons are accounted for.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service added: “Fire engines have been reduced to four in attendance.

“Crews are checking the roof space of nearby units to check for fire spread.

“A large fan is being used to clear smoke from units within the shopping centre.

“A building inspector has confirmed the building is structurally sound, so crews are now working to empty out the contents of the unit.

“Skips have been delivered to assist with this.

“A fire investigation to establish the cause will take place shortly.”
