POLICE have urged anyone with information about the recent fire at Delamere Forest to get in touch, as their investigation so far suggests a disposable barbecue could be at fault.

The fire broke out on Tuesday (July 19) when eight fire engines were originally deployed to the popular beauty spot at Ashton Road after receiving reports from a forest ranger at around 5.40pm.

Fire crews spent almost 24 hours at the scene before declaring it ‘fully damped down’.

Cheshire Police Rural Crime Team posted on social media updating the public on possible causes, and is urging anyone with information to contact them.

Natural England has utilised its expertise to study the extent of the damage and the rural crime team is working with Forestry England to decide how best to work together to prevent future incidents.

A statement from Cheshire Police Rural Crime Team reads: “From attending, it appears there is a potential that the cause of this fire was from a disposal barbecue or open fire from possible evidence found.

“Luckily, due to the great work of Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, the fire was contained however could have easily spread much further.

“Where the fire has taken, this has caused significant damage to the ground and trees which will have an impact on any nesting birds or other wildlife within that area.

“We will be following any enquires to establish who could be involved in the fire, working with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and Delamere Forest.
