A COUNCIL depot in Winsford is set to close with plans to build 100 new homes when the site is demolished and cleared.

Pheonix House, on Clough Lane, has been the home for many of Cheshire West and Chester's (CWAC) services for decades, but it will close at the end of the year.

Services which are currently operating out of the site will be relocated elsewhere in the town.

The council confirmed to the Guardian it had secured more than £1million in Government funding and was working with a developer on the construction of 100 new mixed-tenure homes.

A spokesman for CWAC said: "Cheshire West and Chester Council has secured £1,248,000 from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities’ Brownfield Land Release Fund to bring otherwise unviable local authority-owned sites forward for housing and self and custom build plots.

"This funding will be used to clear the Phoenix Depot site, off Clough Road, Winsford, in readiness for redevelopment for zero carbon, mixed-tenure housing, part of the revitalisation of Winsford town centre.

"The council is working with developer Equans on the construction of 100 new mixed-tenure family homes on the site, providing a mix of affordable rents, shared ownership, open market sale options for residents.

"The modern homes will be delivered with high environmental credentials and with energy efficiency in mind."

In a bid to keep the public up to date on the development, Equans is holding a drop in event tomorrow (Thursday) to obtain their views before a planning application is made.

The spokesman added: "The Phoenix Depot site is due to be vacant by the end of 2022 but is still currently being used by services, which are to be relocated elsewhere in Winsford supported by £995,000 equity loan funding we received from Homes England."

Equans would like to hear residents’ views on the plans before a planning application is submitted and you are invited to a drop in event on Thursday, April 14, 4pm-7pm, at Winsford library.
