WINSFORD UNITED'S unbeaten streak ended on 10 matches.

Players had been unable to train because of illness and injury and it told on a heavy pitch as, after a bright start, Blues faded badly.

But it still took a late penalty to sink them.

The visitors made the early running with Phil Mason twice going close, the first an effort that went inches over the bar before he whistled a 35-yard free kick past the post.

Winger Dave Hodges was giving Mark Calland problems and Michael Langley was forced to save smartly when he broke through.

Winsford's number one was in action again on 18 minutes, this time saving well from Dave Morris.

The second half began with a series of Blues corners but they were unable to make an impression against a well-organised defence.

As the half progressed their midfield played less of a part as Glossop began to launch a series of threatening attacks.

Even so the Winsford defence held up well with chances being limited.

The clearest opening fell to Morris who, faced with an open goal, managed to head wide while the next attack forced a spectacular goal line clearance by captain Lee Duckworth.

On 84 minutes Mason gave away a needless free kick out on the right and from the delivery Dave Ridler was adjudged to have fouled Lee Evans.

Dave Young stepped up to convert with a low shot to the left and, to make matters worse, Ridler picked up a second caution for the foul and was sent off.
