THREE men have been taken to hospital after a crash between a car and a HGV on the M6.

Emergency services were called to the scene southbound between junction 19, for Knutsford, and junction 18, for Holmes Chapel, at about 7am this morning.

In the collision, the HGV left the carriageway and also collided with a tree.

The driver of the car, which was a blue Renault Megane, was taken to hospital, but the extent of his injuries are not yet known.

Two male passengers in the vehicle were also taken to hospital as a precaution after suffering minor injuries.

A North West Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We took three patients to hospital. One of those suffered a head injury.

"Two ambulances, a response vehicle and an advanced paramedic attended the scene."

A Cheshire Police spokesman confirmed lane closures were in place while officers dealt with the incident, which has now been handed to Highways England.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Firefighters were called following reports of a collision involving a HGV and a car on the M6 southbound between junction 19 to junction 18.

"On arrival the crews administered first aid to three people and used cutting equipment to remove the doors of the car for ease of access.

"All lanes were shut for a short period of time. The crews then made the scene safe."
