TWO years after moving into their new operations hub in Winsford, courier Topspeed welcomed Edward Timpson CBE MP to meet with the team and tour the facilities.

With an open day originally planned in 2020, Topspeed’s focus turned to adapting and developing its service, offering to support customers’ requirements throughout the pandemic, as well as transporting PPE, samples and essential medical supplies.

“Now as we are heading towards the lifting of all Covid-19 restrictions, we find ourselves with a stronger business,”said Gillian Lockley, managing director at Topspeed.

“So the timely visit from our MP Edward Timpson has enabled us to proudly demonstrate how our flexibility, robust processes, in-house facilities – and of course our ever-professional operations team, drivers, mechanics and warehouse staff – have made this possible.”

As a specialist courier on the Crown Commercial Service Framework, Topspeed work for public sector organisations including Defra, HMRC, the Ministry of Justice, and the NHS.

Private sector work includes clients from the manufacturing, engineering, nuclear and pharmaceutical industries.

Topspeed continued to operate at full capacity during 2020.

This included transporting dangerous, forensic, sensitive goods,  hazardous and secure goods – as well as the successful collection and delivery of samples and the distribution of medical supplies and PPE.

Topspeed has a fleet of more than140 Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

Each of these is fitted with additional security features, which are maintained by an in-house repair and maintenance facility based in Winsford.

Steve Clegg, founder and CEO of Topspeed, added: “Having the capacity in our 26,000 sq ft unit, we invested significantly over the last year in new warehousing, racking, and specialist equipment to support our developing ‘storage, pick and pack’ service.

“We have grown from a £1.5 million turnover business to a £8.2m business in just six years, and now employ over 140 people around the UK, with the majority of our operations hub colleagues living in the Winsford and Middlewich areas.”

Edward Timpson, MP  for Eddisbury, said: “Topspeed Couriers are a fantastic Winsford company.

“It was fascinating to meet the management team, view their facilities, and hear how they supported the UK Government agencies and NHS over the last 16 months.

“We need skilled and specialised firms like Topspeed playing their part in our local economy – one which they are clearly committed to and support.”

Topspeed was founded in 1985 by Stephen Clegg.

The company now operates both nationally and internationally from its base at Winsford Industrial Estate.

Topspeed employs 28 operations staff and warehouse staff, as well as 117 directly employed full-time drivers.
