A GREAT gran is welcoming new born babies into the world with personal home made gifts.

Mary Ledwards, 92, is knitting clothes for tiny infants at Leighton Hospital.

So far, she has lovingly made 16 cosy pink, blue and white hats, two blankets, two pairs of mittens and a shawl.

The avid knitter plans to make many more garments in different sizes and colours as she says 'no two babies are the same'.

Mary, a resident at Newton Court Bupa Care Home in Middlewich, said: "Knitting is one of my favourite hobbies, I spend a lot of my free time practicing new patterns and garments. I end up making far more garments than my own great grandchildren could ever need.

“We realised that I could put my knitting skills to good use and donate the clothes to those who need them most. I hope my creations will keep the children at the hospital cosy and make the new parents smile.”

Mary has lived at the home for two years and loves getting involved in all the activities.

Her favourite pastimes include puzzle groups, watching snooker with her fellow residents and even helping her carers with daily tasks.

Emily Phillips, activities co-ordinator at home, said: “Mary is one of our most independent residents here at Newton Court and is forever involved with activities.

"She is willing to help the team on a daily basis and often helps us wrap birthday presents, create display boards, and more. The list is endless.

“It was Mary’s idea to take up knitting. She asked us for some wool, knitting needles and a few patterns to copy from and then there was no stopping her. She spends hours knitting in the communal lounge with a cup of tea and only stop for meals.

“We had so many woolly creations that we approached our local hospital in Leighton, who were more than happy to accept Mary’s kind donations.”

Mary Ledwards visited the maternity ward at Leighton Hospital to personally deliver her woollen gifts, accompanied by carers from the home.
