AN animal lover is stepping out on a challenge to help abandoned pets.

Kenny Roberts is embarking on the Sandstone Trail over the Bank Holiday to raise much needed funds for a small cat charity facing a cash crisis.

Willowsway Cat Rescue in Northwich is dedicated to saving unwanted cats and kittens in the town and the surrounding area.

Volunteers arrange the appropriate veterinary care, find foster homes and give the stray and abandoned animals the love and nutrition required to ensure they can be rehomed.

However, Coronavirus has left the charity in a financial predicament.

Volunteer Martine Gum, who fosters cats in her home and his head teacher at St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Winsford, said: "Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020 demand for the charity's services have been extremely high.

"In recent weeks, the charity has reached capacity on the number of cats and kittens it can take and as a result of the increased numbers of cats, the vet bills have escalated.

"The May vet bill currently stands at £2,332. We have no funds left and volunteers are now often having to use their own funds to feed the cats."

Kenny Roberts is determined to walk 34 miles along the Sandstone Trail, from Frodsham to Whitchurch.

Kenny said: "I am hoping to raise money for Willowsway Cat Rescue because it is a charity close to my heart.

"I will be taking on the Sandstone Trail. A mixture of terrain will be expected and a lot of uphill."

Kenny completed the 38-mile challenge in 11 hours and so far has raised £1,923.
