RESTORING pride in Middlewich is a top priority for re-elected Liberal Democrat Cllr Peter Hirst.

The retired hospital physician was very pleased to win 34 per cent of votes in the Cledford by-election.

"Pride in the town is very important," said Cllr Hirst, who served as a town councillor for 16 years from 1999-2015.

"Middlewich was named as one of the top five places to live in England in 2014. I will do whatever I can do to help the town council keep up the image of the town, tackling litter, creating green spaces and hanging baskets.

"The appearance of the town and helping people to have pride in the town is something tangible that we can do."

Working in partnership with neighbouring councils, he believes, could also benefit residents.

"Middlewich has a natural affinity with Northwich and Winsford yet it part of Cheshire East Council," said Cllr Hirst, who has lived in Rushton Drive for 30 years. "Working with other towns would help us all, particularly the tourist industry.

"For example, making sure we don't run events on the same day. We can forge strong links and work together."

Restoring Middlewich railway station is another campaign he feels could bring advantages to people living in the local vicinity.

"I have been a longstanding supporter of reopening this railway line," said Cllr Hirst. "It could reconnect Middlewich to Gadbrook industrial estate and Northwich. People from Winsford could also use it. There was talk of linking the line to Manchester Airport. It would create job opportunities and enable people to into town for events by public transport."

Dealing with traffic congestion in the town centre, he said, needs attention.

"When the bypass is completed, I think there should be a weight restriction imposed on Booth Lane, with the exception of access," he said. "Traffic is atrocious."

Cllr Hirst said he is looking forward to getting to know councillors and has pledged to do all he can to support local residents.

Labour Cllr David Williams was also re-elected to Middlewich Town Council in the Cledford by-election.
