LABOUR'S David Williams has vowed to make a difference after winning 58 per cent of the vote in the Cledford by-election.

The dad-of-three from Warmingham Lane said he is determined to improve public services and facilities for Middlewich residents.

"During the election I had hundreds of socially distanced doorstep conversations with residents and heard their thoughts and ideas about how we can make living in Middlewich better," said Cllr Williams.

"I want to continue the conversations, not just have them at election time, and put those great ideas at the heart of a new Neighbourhood Plan, turning words into actions."

He said he 'has a track record of campaigning and getting things done' after serving as a town councillor from 2015-2018.

"I organised a successful petition to get a timetable for the bypass, which we now have and is set to be finished in 2024," he said. "I also won a campaign to reinstate our evening bus services and made Middlewich Town Council a Living Wage employer.

"People are now struggling to register with dentists and doctors. I know this is not a town council responsibility, but I want the council to be a strong voice making representations to the people whose responsibility it is."

Cllr Williams, who works as a media officer for trade union Usdaw, has pledged to do all he can to give residents a voice.

"I want to make sure that the new Neighbourhood Plan is not just about planning issues but concerns all aspects of living in Middlewich," he said. "I want to have a really good look at all the issues involving residents, including traffic, the bypass and school places.

"I believe we need a wide-ranging neighbourhood plan that is written with extensive public consultation.

"I can't wait to get to work, alongside current and new councillors, and finish the job that Labour has already begun.

"I would like to thank voters for putting their trust in me. To receive 58 per cent of the vote is a strong endorsement of the campaign we ran.

"Labour put forward a positive plan of change for Middlewich and I'm looking forward to getting the job done."

Cllr Mike Hunter, chairman of Middlewich Town Council, said: “The huge margin of David’s victory shows that residents have given him a massive vote of confidence.

"And such a result mid-term suggests that residents generally approve of what the Labour-led council has so far achieved, and the progress we have made to put the Council back on the right footing - which we committed to when we took charge in 2019.”

Liberal Democrat Dr Peter Hirst was also elected as a Cledford councillor after receiving 34 per cent of the votes.

The turnout was 24 per cent.
