A DREAM has come true for a schoolboy who is mad about elephants.

Harry Ollier was upset when Chester Zoo had to close during the pandemic.

The animal lover from Winsford decided to raise as much money as he could by walking two miles every day.

Harry braved rain and hailstones

His epic challenge saw him trek 216 miles for 97 days through rain, hail and snow and raise £734, just before his ninth birthday.

Harry finished his walk on the day the zoo re-opened and was clapped in by appreciative staff, who had arranged a big surprise for him.

The Cuddington Primary School pupil was thrilled to meet elephant keeper Katie Morrison to talk about his passion.

Harry was proud to wear a prevention extinction T-shirt donated by the zoo throughout his challenge.

Mum Linda said: "He is a big animal fan. He came up with the idea of a fundraiser called Two4TheZoo.

"He was absolutely determined to complete his challenge.

Northwich Guardian:

Harry received a certificate from Tanya Simpson from Chester Zoo to thank him for his efforts

"Nothing stopped him whatever the weather. Even when it snowed and there were hailstones, he kept on going.

"We are so proud of him. His sheer determination was incredible. "

Even a snow storm failed to stop Harry in his tracks

Harry was accompanied on his walk by dad Jonathan and sometimes brothers, James, 12 and Freddie, three, joined in too.

"Harry is so genuine, very caring and does everything for animals," said Linda.

Harry was determined to raise as much money as he could

"He has already done a couple of sponsored walks for the zoo over the past few years and raised £100 each time.

He would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated as it is your generosity that has ensured the zoo's survival."

Harry, a member of Whitegate Cubs, wants to do all he can to prevent extinction and support the zoo which has 35,000 animals and helps conservation organisations all over the world.

Northwich Guardian:

"He always gives 100 per cent," said Linda. "He has climbed Snowdon with his dad and loves outdoor activities and camping.

"Elephants are his favourite animals. He is considering working with animals when he is older."
