A MEMORIAL bench at Knutsford Bowling Club has been destroyed after it was set on fire by vandals.

The incident took place on the evening of Saturday, April 10, and also involved fencing and stakes being set alright.

Police enquiries in relation to who is responsible remain ongoing.

David Mee, bowling secretary at the Mereheath Lane club, said: “They started a fire, feeding it with a 30 foot length of fencing including stakes.

“They also burnt three benches on the fire, including a memorial bench dedicated to a member’s deceased husband.

“The whole area had been tidied up and what these youths used was the section of fence to the right, including all posts and the gate at the end.

“All benches, bar one, shown under the canopy were used on the fire.”

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police confirmed: “At 12.20pm on April 12, police were called to reports of criminal damage at the bowling club on Mereheath Lane, Knutsford.

“The caller reported damage to a number of fence panels and a bench had been set on fire.

“The incident is believed to have occurred sometime between 7.45pm and 11pm on Saturday, April 10.

“No arrests have been made and enquiries remain ongoing."
