MOTORISTS travelling on the M6 southbound experienced delays this afternoon, Sunday, due to a broken down horsebox.

Two lanes were closed and traffic was slow between junction 18 for Holmes Chapel and junction 19 for Knutsford.

Firefighters attended the scene and on arrival they found that a car, which was towing a horsebox, had stopped in lane one and was smoking.

Firefighters checked the vehicle with a thermal imaging camera and there was no sign of any fire but instead the engine had overheated.

The crew monitored the vehicle and stayed at the scene until the car had been recovered.

Firefighters were detained at the scene for around 90 minutes.
