WINSFORD joined people all over the world to mark World Earth Day.

This annual campaign first celebrated in 1970 now includes events coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network in more than 193 countries.

Winsford Town Council placed pom poms on trees in the Town Park made by Peoples Choice Group members at Winsford Support Group, Vivo Care Choices Winsford Supported Living and Meadowbank Lodge and Chester Link.

Peoples Choice group runs social sessions for adults with learning disabilities and autism like crafts, singing and drama. They also offer free learning disability and autism awareness and acceptance training courses to organisations delivered by group members.

The council worked with Vale Royal School Sport Partnership to help produce three special edition family photo trails around Winsford.

The salt stacks in the town park were lit up in green.

The council supported Plantlife's request to pause mowing in May to allow daisies and dandelions to flower in the grass. The council has many areas in the town that are just mowed grass.

A biodiversity poster was created to encourage residents to only buy what they need, eat less meat, dairy and processed food, buy local and in season and grow their own food wherever possible.

Cllr Lyndsay Barwell, chairman of the open spaces committee, said:"It was important to me to recognise Earth Day. Humans have had a huge impact on nature in the UK, with more than half of species in decline.

"I'm looking forward to the town council increasing biodiversity in our parks."
