College students in East Lancashire have been gaining insight into the music profession from industry experts.

Blackburn College’s music performance and technology students enjoyed online workshops delivered by Manchester-based industry specialists Spirit Studios.

Spirit Studios, an independent higher education provider specialising in music production, music business and sound engineering, delivered the virtual events to year one and two learners over Zoom.

The sessions were presented by Holly Phelps and Lewis Jones, who gave students insights into industry software, Ableton Music Production, and live sound engineering.

Students learned the processes behind creating a track as well as producing samples and audio from scratch and engaging in mixing arrangement.

They were also tasked with capturing high-quality recording of drums, electric guitars and bass guitars with industry-standard microphones.

Music lecturer and technician at Blackburn College, Callum Aspinall, said: “We were delighted to give Spirit Studios a virtual Blackburn College welcome and have them deliver highly educational sessions which our students enjoyed and were engaged in.

“Alongside these presentations, both Holly and Lewis provided careers advice to the learners.

"They discussed Spirit Studios as an institution, the exciting courses they have to offer, UCAS applications and interview processes with our year two's, bursaries, student finance and student welfare.

“It is of the utmost importance to the music department at Blackburn College that we highlight clear progression pathways to our students, so they have solid preparation for a successful future career within the industry.”
