ONE person was taken to hospital after several vehicles were involved in a crash on the M6 last night.

Traffic came to a standstill between junction 23 at Haydock and junction 25 at Bryn due to the collision.

The motorway was closed in both directions while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Residents reported being stuck in traffic on the motorway for a couple of hours on Thursday evening.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Firefighters were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the M6, near to junctions 25 to 24, at 7.20pm on Thursday, 21 January.

“Two fire engines from Wigan and one from Leigh fire stations, alongside the Technical Response Unit from Leigh, quickly arrived to the scene.

“The collision involved four vehicles. The fire service made the scene safe and were in attendance for just over one hour.”

A North West Ambulance spokesperson added: "We received a call at around 7pm to reports of a multi vehicle road traffic collision.

"We have taken one patient to hospital with chest injuries."
