TRAVELLERS have set up an illegal camp in Middlewich.

Caravans and vehicles have moved onto the car park of the Harvester Salt Cellar near the roundabout in Holmes Chapel Road.

Talks are now underway to arrange for the travellers to leave the site.

Residents living nearby are concerned about the litter, dirt and risk to public health.

One man told The Guardian: "It is an absolute mess. There is rubbish and faeces everywhere, it is disgusting.

"What is annoying me is who is going to pay to clear all this up? It can cost up to £50,000."

A spokesman for Cheshire East Council said: "This is on private land which is not owned by the council."

Landowners must meet the cost of the clean up for encampments on private land.

A spokesman for Harvester said: "We are aware of the travellers currently using the Harvester Salt Cellar car park.

"We are working with the local authorities to establish when we can reasonably ask them to leave the site."
