STORM Christoph has left its mark on Cheshire this week with heavy rain, snow and severe flooding.

The Environment Agency has issued a number of flood warnings and alerts throughout Northwich, Winsford, Middlewich, Knutsford and Wilmslow.

Most of these remain in place today, January 22, as areas like Northwich recover from devastating floods on Wednesday and Thursday.

As of 8.20am, the following flood warnings remain in place:

  • River Bollin and Agden Brook at Little Bollington
  • River Weaver at Anderton
  • River Weaver at Little Leigh
  • River Weaver at Navigation Road and Marine Approach, Northwich
  • River Weaver at Northwich Marina
  • River Weaver at Pickerings Bridge
  • River Weaver at Weaverham and Acton Bridge
  • Weaver Navigation in Winsford

In those areas, flooding is expected and immediate action is required, although Little Bollington’s warning has been downgraded from severe overnight.

There are also flood alerts for the rest of the Weaver catchment in Northwich and Winsford, the Bollin catchment in Knutsford and Wilmslow, and the Dane catchment in Middlewich and Holmes Chapel – with flooding possible in these areas.

A number of road closures also remain in place this morning, including:

  • A49 Acton Bridge between Bartington crossroads and Sandy Lane
  • A49 Cotebrook
  • A56 Little Bollington
  • Davenham Road, Rudheath
  • London Road, Northwich
  • Lymm Road, Little Bollington

The situation remains will remain under constant review throughout the day by Cheshire Police and other authorities, including the Environment Agency.

Supt Julie Westgate, from Cheshire Police, said: “I want to reassure local residents that collectively we are doing everything we can to minimise the impact on the local community.

“Whilst the heavy rain has stopped and flood waters are subsiding, a number of flood alerts and road closures remain in place and we are urging people to be aware of these and to only travel if it is absolutely essential.

“If you do need to go out please take extra care and allow more time for this as there is a risk of surface water flooding and weather-related debris in places.”

Residents are reminded not to drive or walk through any flood water – this is often deeper than it looks, may be moving fast and there could be hidden hazards underneath such as raised manhole covers.
