A WINSFORD chippy has come up with novel dishes to give customers something different.

Allan Aston is serving battered haggis at Al's Plaice in Winsford Shopping Cross.

A fried crispy version of Scotland's national dish is going down a treat.

As Burn's Night approaches on Monday, he hopes it could really take off.

"I get 6oz haggis from Scotland in the shape of a little fat sausage," said Al. "There are quite a few Scottish people living round here and they say they can't get haggis.

"It's proving popular."

Haggis is made from lamb, beef, oats, onions and spices.

Creative Allan doesn't just deep fry savoury treats, he also gives popular chocolate bars and snacks his own crispy twist.

"I do battered Mars Bar and fried Nutella butties," said Al, who has run the business for three-and-a-half years. "Give me a chance and I'll batter anything and give it a go."

Allan is offering takeaway and home delivery service through Uber but says the town centre is really quiet.

"Footfall in the shopping centre has dropped drastically," said Allan, who employs 10 people. "It is really hard at the moment. Around 60 per cent of the shops are shut so people aren't coming into town.

"It costs a considerable amount of gas and electric to keep the business open along with wages and other costs. Some days I'm working for nothing or at a loss.

"I've put a couple of staff on furlough but I'm trying to give the others as many hours as I can. If we're quiet I shut 30 mins early to save that little bit of cost.

"I must also try to reduce cost to ensure our future viability. I'm here for the long term."

Al's Plaice is open for breakfast from 8.30am to 10.30am and the chippy runs from 11am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
