A PHENOMENAL two tonnes of food and toys have been donated to families in need.

Middlewich Round Table says this year's Santa sleigh has been bigger and better than ever.

Volunteers have been overwhelmed by the generosity of people from all over town.

A giant warehouse was stacked full of boxes and bags of soup, beans, vegetables, pasta, cereals, rice, games and play equipment.

Josh Hicks, from Middlewich Round Table, said: "The response this year has been bigger and better than ever. People have really got into the Christmas spirit, it has been absolutely heartwarming.

"We filled 16 car loads to take it all to the Salvation Army. So many families gave us toys as well as food which is really appreciated."

New Covid regulations failed to dampen spirits as children dressed up in Christmas costumes, reindeer antlers and festive hats to greet Santa as he sleighed round town.

A team of enthusiastic volunteers introduced measures to keep everyone safe by wearing masks and social distancing.

"Everyone adapted so well and stuck to the guidelines," said Josh. "We absolutely love doing this every year and this time it was extra special as everyone needed some Christmas cheer.

Everyone was praised for sticking to the new Covid safety guidelines

"It's lovely that the people of Middlewich have rallied round to help those less fortunate than themselves."

Hundreds of children waved and cheered as Santa visited streets across the town for seven nights.

The Round Table would like to thank various businesses which supported the event.

Moretons Contractors in King Street provided a tractor and drivers Rob Moreton and Andy Bickerton gave up their time to help.

Indigo Promotions supplied face coverings for Santa and his helpers.

Chimichangos Mexican restaurant and The White Bear, both in Wheelock Street, both provided hot food and refreshments for volunteers.

"We went out straight from work so it was nice to have a hot meal afterwards," said Josh."We want to say a great big thank you to everyone for supporting us. All the gifts have now been taken to the Salvation Army and are being distributed to families who need that little extra help."
