A GIANT 26ft Santa is the star attraction of a colossal Christmas grotto in Winsford.

Peter and Vicky Rooney have turned their home in Beagle Point into a magical winter wonderland in memory of a courageous little girl.

The couple are raising money for Alder Hey Children's Hospital where their niece Beci-Lee Hodge sadly died.

Last year, their stunning festive display raised £900.

Beci-Lee's mum Jenny said: "Each year my brother, his family and friends decorate their house for children. This is done to raise money for Alder Hey hospital who do amazing things for children.

"My daughter sadly lost a battle with brain tumour when she was 10. She was looked after so well and they did everything possible to help her. We are eternally grateful for everything they did for us and this is just a small way of saying thank you.

"Any donations however big or small will be very much appreciated."

This year's lights were put up in just two weeks and are bigger and better than ever.

Dad-of-five Peter said: "We've gone a lot bigger, we have added another 100 metres of rope lights and made a fence through the inflatables."

Children will be able to start a snow storm by putting money into a coin meter when it arrives later this week.

More exciting surprises are in store.

"We're adding to it all the time so the best bet is not to come past just once," said engineer Peter. "We've had some great comments which is lovely. Just hearing laughter from kids outside makes it all worthwhile."

Peter's children who still live at home Eddie, three, Alexa, give, and Georgia, 15, are also really excited, and daughters Melanie, 21, and Charlotte, 23, help support the fundraising.

"The little ones are really sociable and want to talk to everyone who comes,"said Peter. "It's a nightmare getting them back inside."

Life-sized snowmen guard Santa, who dwarfs the house, and stands beside an eight-foot reindeer and polar bear.

"Luckily we've got a friend, Chris Tilly, who is a joiner and puts all the lights up," said Peter, who would also like to thank his brother-in-law Paul Doran and friend Dan Jones who helped to instal the decorations.

"Our family has all clubbed together to buy the lights and we will pay for all the electricity. Whatever anyone donates will go to Alder Hey. We just want to thank them for everything they did for Beci-Lee."

A postbox outside the house is available for donations or people can visit justgiving.com/fundraising/jenny-h1 to support Alder Hey Children's Hospital.
