KAREN Shore, deputy leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council, has promised residents more consultation over the implementation of future active travel schemes.

Cllr Shore, who also oversees strategic transport for the authority, made comments at a public question time session with the council’s cabinet.

When asked about the active travel schemes, which have been met with some resistance in Chester, Cllr Shore said: “The funding came from central government and it was a case of use it or lose it.

“Whilst I think it is very important that we do some learning… from tranche 1, [we are] looking forward to tranche 2. I do still think it is a very good scheme.”

Pressed on residents’ involvement in the plans by Dave Guest, ex-BBC Northwest Tonight reporter hosting the session, Cllr Shore added: “We consulted through Walk, Ride, Thrive. We consulted on the walking infrastructure plan.

“We still hear from people that they would have liked more. Going forward, into tranche 2, that is exactly what we will be doing.”

The Central and Grange ward representative also highlighted the council’s new active travel taskforce, which will evaluate the schemes in the borough.

Active travel has become something of a political football in CWAC, with Conservative group members calling for the schemes to be suspended at November’s cabinet meeting.

Shadow cabinet member Cllr Neil Sullivan has also submitted a notice of motion to remove the lanes for next week’s full council meeting.

CWAC full council will meet at 6pm on Thursday, December 10.
