TRAFFIC jams blocked Station Road in Winsford for several hours this morning.

After months of delays, drivers had been expecting quicker journeys to work after the traffic light sequencing at long-running roadworks was altered today.

Traffic on Bostock Road, where gas works are being carried out, has now been flipped to the opposte direction and a new diversion is in place.

But the change caught many people out.

Drivers and residents vented their anger on social media.

One resident said: "I live on Station Road, the traffic has been queuing since before 7am, two hours later and it’s worse, I can’t even get out of my drive. Nun House Drive is completely blocked also and all down station Road. Complete chaos."

A dad said: "Another day another main route road closure. Took me over an hour to do the school run today. Turning into a joke now."

One mum added: "It’s gonna be like this for the next three days it says the A533 is closed for three days. It’s a nightmare. I live near Morrison manufacture place and we didn’t get any warning whatsoever. It was from this morning on the school run, I seen the sign."

Winsford Town Cllr Nathan Pardoe, who represents Wharton, is confident changes made to the temporary lights will improve traffic flow and drivers will have a much quicker journey home this evening.

Cllr Pardoe said: "The queues on Station Road and Nun House Drive were reported this morning and highways adjusted the traffic light sequencing at the A54 / Road One junction to help traffic flow.

"Today's flipping of the diversion route means it will be much quicker for people to get home as they will be able to use Bostock Road instead of being diverted down Road One and getting stuck at the traffic lights."

The long running roadworks are nearing completion.

Cllr Pardoe added: "Residents were unhappy with the long delays at the Road One/A54 junction under the old diversion. The Bostock Road gas works are due to be completed next Monday which will be a big help. The remaining works on Road One are due to be completed on Friday, December 18, weather permitting.

"I know roadworks aren't ideal but the nature of the works means they couldn't be rescheduled. I'd like to thank residents for their understanding."
