ENERGETIC young footballers have been walking, cycling and running to reach an ambitious goal to help children in need.

Winsford Diamonds Football Club invited each of their teams to complete 570km, the distance from Winsford to Wembley and back.

Players set up a JustGiving page to raise £3,000 to support Winsford Community Grocery and the Salvation Army Christmas toy appeal.

In just three weeks, the children have already collected more than £1,920.

The challenge was mounted to encourage players to keep active whilst they have been unable to train and play during lockdown.

Kelly Mitchell, from Winsford Diamonds, said: "They have done really well and will continue to push to the end of the week.

"Some teams have gone way beyond the distance and have made it to Wembley twice, there and back again.

"The challenge has kept teams very active and motivated to get out when they would normally have had training sessions. It has kept their fitness up and kept them active."

The parent of one player from Winsford Diamonds under 9s ran a football card and raised more than £100.

Compass Minerals charity committee has donated £250 towards the toy appeal.

"We are very grateful for all the support we have received,"said Kelly. "We would like to say a big thank you to everyone. We are really grateful as we know at this time of year people haven't got spare money but have rallied together to give what they can."

Winsford Community Grocery supports local families by providing food, essential household items and toys.

The Salvation Army is appealing for new, unwrapped toys or presents that can be given to local children who may otherwise not receive a gift at Christmas.
