A CHESHIRE historian has found plenty of time during lockdown, to write not one, but two new books on some of his favourite subjects.

Tony Bostock, who lives in the Swanlow area of Winsford, spent more than 30 years working for Cheshire Police before his retirement, but has always had a passionate interest in history.

That interest led him a degree in History followed by a Masters in Local History, which he has more than put to good use since by writing dozens of publications over the years.

During lockdown, Tony added two more books to that ever growing list, including, 'A Damnable and Sinister regime: Vale Royal Abbey 1260-1538', which tell the history of the ancient abbey through the medieval period.

The second is a look at some of Cheshire's ancient villages and is titled 'Cheshire's Charms: Ancient Villages & Hamlets', which Tony finished during the summer after travelling round the county taking photos.

Tony said: "Since my school days I have had a passionate interest in the history of my home county.

"Over the years I have taught classes on local history research, detecting family history and heraldry at a number of adult educational establishments.

"Having now retired from a professional life in public service, I now spend much of my time researching local history, heraldry and genealogy.

"The story of Vale Royal is written in a way as to appeal to the general reader, those who have an interest in medieval monasticism, and of course those who enjoy learning about Cheshire’s past.

"In addition to relating the history of the abbey there is a final chapter on the man responsible for the abbey’s destruction, Sir Thomas Holcroft, who established a home among the mediaeval cloistral buildings. Sir Thomas is an intriguing character who served three monarchs as a courtier, soldier, diplomat and spy master."

The second book Tony recently completed, focuses on the many ancient villages and hamlets within the county, the history of which have been a life-long passion.

He said: "The old county of Cheshire is rich in treasures from the past and has a fascinating history.

"The county owes much to its geographical position, its natural features - rocks and rivers - and its people, the occupants of the villages, who made and shaped her history.

"The largely unspoilt rural landscape is dotted with quaint towns and villages, all of which have a story to tell and each has its own unique charm - landscape; architectural gems in the form of churches, houses and cottages; legends and historic curiosities.

"In this book I have considered over fifty villages explaining the origin of their place-names, their early history and interesting and unique aspects.

"For those who just wish to learn something of Cheshire's villages and their character, or those who want to get out and explore some of those places which lie off the beaten track, this book will provide much needed information."
