MOTORISTS were caught speeding in Middlewich in a speed check as a police helicopter hovered overhead.
Altogether, 51 vehicles were recorded breaking the speed limit on an accident blackspot in the town.
Volunteers from Warmingham Lane Community Speed Watch carried out an hour long covert surveillance operation yesterday evening.
A group spokesman said: "During the early evening rush, 122 vehicles entered Middlewich via Warmingham Lane. Of those, 51 were breaking the speed limit approaching the roundabout, with eight exceeding 40mph.
"The highest recorded speed was 50mph.
"With the help of Middlewich Police and Cheshire Police we can hopefully persuade Middlewich Town Council and Cheshire East that something needs to be done to slow traffic down before something serious happens."
Middlewich Police have provided training for members of the community who have set up a Community Speed Watch team in Warmingham Lane.
A police spokesman said: "Remember that the road is a 30 until you reach the sign which indicates the change in speed."
