AN appeal has been launched to make Christmas extra special for homeless dogs.

Winsford dog walker Haleema Kara is hoping to fill 100 shoeboxes with treats.

Her business Muddy Paws has teamed up with Manchester and Cheshire Dogs Home, which cares for more than 7,000 dogs every year.

Once the dogs are fit and healthy they are made available for adoption.

"Dogs are companion animals and need lots of enrichment," said Haleema. "There are no visitors at present because of Covid restrictions. I have not met one dog who doesn't love a bit of affection from humans.

"My aim is to fill 100 boxes but I'm hoping to get more than that. It will give dogs a positive experience."

Blankets, towels, fun toys, leads, bowls, beds, food and chewy treats are some of the many items which would be very much appreciated.

"You don't have to have a shoebox, you can use any delivery box or just donate a bag of treats," said Haleema. "I sorted through dog toys my dogs don't play with anymore and filled three boxes."

Former teacher Haleema has four dogs Eddie, an English pointer rescue, Raffi, an English springer spaniel and two black labradors, Sid and Jim.

"My dogs won't leave my side," said Haleema, who offers a dog walking, grooming and home boarding service.

"My mum's dog, Ralph came from Cheshire Dogs Home so I've been there a few times and seen the great work they do. Staff are working overtime to make up for the lack of visitors.

"I want to do my bit to give back and help them out."

Donations and filled shoeboxes can be collected by Muddy Paws in a Covid safe manner, before December 18.
