CHILDREN paid tribute to Middlewich war heroes in their own special Remembrance Day commemoration.

Pupils at St Mary's Catholic Primary School spent all week making poppies and created a memorial garden in their newly created forest area.

Youngsters attached more than 200 poppies to trees as teachers fixed white lights to the branches.

Each class took it in turns to walk in silence with teachers through the forest on Friday. The children then prayed for all fallen servicemen and women who lost their lives during wars and conflicts.

Headteacher Janet McKinlay said: "As the British Legion can't hold the annual parade and service at the Bull Ring due to the pandemic, pupils and staff paid their respects at their own Remembrance Day walk.

"Each child made a poppy. We threaded them on a wire and attached them to the branches of trees in our new forest area."

Children used 200 polystyrene egg boxes donated from Morrisons to create the poppies, using acrylic paint.

"Morrisons kindly donated the boxes as we have our own chickens but they stop laying eggs in the winter." said Mrs McKinlay. "We remember those who have died during the month of November so we were also able to pay our respects to members of our own families."
