FAMILIES have been praised for designing amazing colourful characters in a fun-filled challenge.

The first ever scarecrow festival in Middlewich attracted more than 60 stunning entries.

Night striker which lit up in the dark was chosen as the winner

Creative youngsters could use anything at home, including clothes and various bits and pieces to build their characters.

Families were able to follow an interactive map to visit all the scarecrows.

Josh Hicks, from Middlewich Round Table who organised the competition, said: "While there can only be a few winners, every single scarecrow was amazing.

"We've seen some incredible entries. This community new community event is designed to get everyone involved in a fun yet safe way.

Bert was joint runner up

All entries were judged on style, build quality and name.

First prize was awarded to night striker with the greatest scarecrow and Bert being declared joint runners up.

Retiring rose queen Aimee Halewood, rose queen elect Cavan Conlon and Cllr Mike Hunter, chairman of Middlewich Town Council judged the competition.

Organisers would like to thank Morrisons for providing prizes.

The competition was free to enter but people taking part were asked to make a donation to school parent teacher associations who have not been able to raise funds at their usual summer fetes and events this year.
