WINSFORD Tennis Club officials are eager to see more people making use of the courts at Knights Grange.

A programme of surface washes has been completed on the four hard courts.

This will mean more availability to play on non-slip surfaces for members.

The two hard-surface council middle courts had been power-washed a while back, while the club’s two courts were done last week.

And this is all very timely considering the club’s membership has doubled despite the Covid-19 pandemic, while the club's chiefs also say membership fees are half price until the end of March.

“We’ve used the middle two courts all year while ours have been greasy, and they’ve been used for pay and play which we do through Chester West and Cheshire,” said chairman Chris Mayoh, who added that the council have promised to pay half of the £1,000 costs for the work on the middle two courts.

“Because they’ve let us use their courts we said we’d get the power washing done.

“They’ve been really greasy and we don’t want people slipping.

“We’ve increased the membership even with the Covid. We’ve doubled it to around 70 this year, which is very good for us being a small club.

“The courts have been improved dramatically having put the work in and spent some money on them, the membership’s improved dramatically, so come and play at Winsford Tennis Club.”

The two pay-and-play courts can be booked through the club via their website at £6.50 per hour, while members can play for free.

The club currently has a men’s team playing in the South and Mid Cheshire League winter competition but would like more women players to become involved so that a mixed team can be put together as well.

“We usually put two teams in the summer league, and one in the winter,” said Chris.

“We’re looking for ladies so we can enter a mixed team again. We had one in the past and it did quite well.”

Two grass courts are currently used for junior football due to being unfit for purpose.

The men's winter team lost 6-2 at home to Wistaston at the weekend.
