A MUM fed up with cars travelling at 'frightening' speeds along a busy walking route to school has launched a petition to introduce a 20mph zone.

Amy Jones, from Greenbank, walks with her child along Firdale Road to and from Winnington Park Primary School every day.

The winding road, which also carries traffic to Moss Farm and Firdale Medical Centre, currently has a 30mph limit.

But Amy says speeding drivers are a far too common sight on the road – and she believes it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.

"The road is quite bendy and because there is no pedestrian crossing there are limited places where you can cross," she said.

"The speed of the cars that come down that road is frightening at times. There have been times where it has been clear to cross the road, but we have been unable to get to the other side before a car has been approaching us.

"I just think, because there are primary school children crossing the road, there should be a 20 mph limit."

More than 50 people have backed Amy's petition so far, including fellow parents at Winnington Park.

PCSOs have conducted speed checks along Firdale Road on three occasions over the past month following reports of speeding vehicles.

Cheshire West and Chester Council decided against having a 20mph limit on the road two years ago and the council says there are no current plans to introduce one.

A CWAC spokesman said: "A speed limit assessment for Greenbank was carried out in 2018, which included Firdale Road.

"There are currently no plans to review this, however, any reassessment request should be channelled through the ward member [Cllr Patricia Parkes or Cllr Phil Herbert] who can then liaise with the council’s road safety team.

"The team can then assess whether the factors have significantly changed since 2018."
