CHESHIRE East and West have seen a drop in their daily number of new coronavirus cases.

Figures from Public Health England show the number of cases confirmed in the 24 hours up to 9am today, October 16.

In Cheshire East, including Knutsford and Middlewich, there were 103 new coronavirus cases recorded in that time.

That takes the borough’s total to 4,407 Covid-19 cases since the pandemic began.

Meanwhile in Cheshire West, including Northwich and Winsford, there were 83 new coronavirus cases recorded in 24 hours

That takes the borough’s total to 4,112 Covid-19 cases since the pandemic began.

It means there were a total of 186 new cases across the two boroughs.

Today’s figure is a fairly sizeable drop from the 113 new cases Cheshire West saw in the 24 hours up to 9am on Thursday, October 16.

For Cheshire East, there were 108 new cases in yesterday’s figures.

With both boroughs facing their first weekend in ‘tier two’ lockdown restrictions, residents are being urged not to travel to the ‘tier three’ areas of Merseyside and Halton.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Boris Johnson rejected calls for a national lockdown, insisting that the Government's tiered approach was the right one.
