WINSFORD war heroes will be honoured this year at a special ceremony - despite coronavirus regulations.

Town councillors still hope to hold their annual service beside the town's monuments on Remembrance Sunday, November 8.

Hundreds of residents usually join veterans and civic dignitaries for a parade and service organised jointly by Winsford Town Council and the Winsford branch of the Royal British Legion.

Despite the pandemic, members vowed to do all they can at a council meeting on Monday evening to make sure a civic commemoration goes ahead.

Unlike the Christmas Street Festival which had to be cancelled because of the size and scale of the event, councillors believe the shopping centre venue is more manageable with fewer people.

Town clerk Mark Bailey said: "Given that the nature of Remembrance Sunday is solemn rather than celebratory, I think we a that we can organise this event.

"It is extremely important to people in the town that we honour our war dead."

Outgoing mayor Cllr Ailsa Gaskill-Jones said a ceremony to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day in May went ahead very succesfully this year, whilst adhering to social distancing regulations.

"The people of Winsford were very appreciative that we did something," said Cllr Gaskill-Jones. "We broadcast the service on Facebook live so that residents could watch it and we had music. It was one of the highlights of my mayoral year."

A Covid-19 risk assessment will be carried out as soon as possible to demonstrate how people will be protected within social distancing measures.

The application to hold the event must be submitted to Cheshire West and Chester Council by Friday, September 25.
