FRIDAY'S win over Hull KR marked the home debut of Saints' teenage centre Josh Simm - a young player who has already impressed coach Kristian Woolf with his attitude and application this term.
The grandson of the late, hugely popular former Saints skipper Geoff Pimblett, the 19-year-old has a fine family tradition to uphold in the red vee but he is putting his best foot forward.
Having made his debut in the depleted team that went to London last season, Simm has produced two solid first team displays this year in the centre.
The six-footer, in the words of coach Kristian Woolf, came back "bigger, stronger and fitter" after Covid to earn his shot with Mark Percival out.
A prolific scorer with 30 tries from 20 appearances in the 19s last term, Simm would have grabbed his first senior try against Huddersfield a fortnight ago but for a forward pass call.
And selected again last week against Hull KR, Simm tackled well and was generally pretty sound, composed and solid in a tight encounter to give the coach further options from the whole squad that will be needed to cover both Percival and Kevin Naiqama as a gruelling year progresses.
* Geoff Pimblett, who sadly died in February 2018, was an absolute Saints club legend and gentleman to boot, playing 365 times for his home town team, winning the Lance Todd and Harry Sunderland trophies before going on to become a key man in developing the club's past players association.
