EXCITED children have been wasting no time in getting through the school gates at Oak View Academy thanks to their new prickly pal.
Speedy the Hedgehog has been visiting the Winsford primary to greet pupils on arrival, but only if they are on time.
Designed to encourage punctuality, the spiky mascot is proving popular with youngsters who can’t wait to meet Speedy in the playground.
Speedy the hedgehog only greets pupils who are on time
It’s all part of the school’s drive to get children into the school in a safe and orderly fashion as they observe strict safety measures to guard against Covid-19, which include staggered arrival times for different age groups.
Fiona Whittaker, executive headteacher, said: “The children only see Speedy if they arrive at school on time.
“He’s there to greet the children when they arrive at their different times and he’s proving to be a popular new addition to the school.

“The children are happy to be back in school and we are delighted to welcome them back.”
Speedy the hedgehog welcomes pupils into Oak View Academy
Oak View, part of North West Academies Trust which runs schools across Cheshire, are working hard to make learning as varied and engaging as ever for pupils despite the new safety conditions they now operate under.
Ms Whittaker added: “The children have loved the opportunity to socialise with each other once again.
“As well as phonics, reading, writing and maths, they have been doing PE, wellbeing activities and have been starting to think about their new topics.”
