A TEMPORARY pedestrian crossing has been installed at the Parkgate roadworks following concerns about safety in the area.

The roadworks are part of a scheme to create a roundabout at the junction of Mobberley Road and Parkgate Lane, linked to 14 planned units at Parkgate Industrial Estate.

Debbie Jamison, secretary for Knutsford Residents in Over Ward (KROW), called on residents to complain to Cheshire East Council about the lack of a safe crossing that could be used by residents and workers trying to access shops in the area.

She said that CEC had not been listening to residents' concerns about the issue, but now the council says a temporary crossing will be in place for the duration of the works

Cllr Laura Crane, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for highways and waste, said: “We have been aware that during these extensive roadworks, a temporary pedestrian crossing might be required but it was not possible to include a crossing at the early stages of the project, owing to the fluid nature of the preparatory work being carried out.

“Now that the scheme is progressing as planned, and in view of the concerns expressed by local residents, the developers have installed a temporary crossing for the duration of the works.

“We would add that in view of the presence of two other crossings a short distance in either direction, the junction improvement works being carried out did comply with the safety of street works and roadworks code of practice without the requirement for a temporary crossing.”

The crossing was not the only concern Debbie raised about the works.

She also called on residents to lodge complaints with the council about closed footpaths and the lack of parking for local shops.

Debbie said: "The way this development and highways works has been handled is an example of poor process and lack of respect for community involvement, which has tried to be positive.”
