JET2 has called for ‘clarity and consistency’ from the government after suspending flights to the Balearic and Canary Islands.

The Leeds Bradford Airport based airline announced it is suspending flights and holidays to Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza up to, and including August 9.

This follows yesterday’s announcement that Jet2 had suspended flights and holidays to its destinations in mainland Spain.

In its statement Jet2 says the information it receives from government on the Spanish flights situation is contradictory and ‘often comes with little or no notice’.

A Jet2 spokesman said: “Following the latest government advice regarding travel to the Balearic and Canary Islands from the UK, we have taken the decision to suspend flights and holidays to Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza up to and including August 9.

“We have already suspended flights and holidays to our destinations in Mainland Spain (Costa de Almeria, Alicante, Malaga and Murcia) up to and including August 16.

“Where customers are affected by any programme changes, we have been repeatedly recognised for how we have been looking after customers, offering the option to rebook with no admin fee, a Refund Credit Note or a full cash refund, and we will be contacting customers to discuss these options.

We will also be contacting customers who are currently in these destinations to advise them of their options regarding flying back to the UK, so we urge customers not to contact us

"For customers who are due to travel to these destinations after the dates given above, we will provide an additional update once we receive more information from the government.”

Jet2 also called for more clarity from the Government in a fast-moving situation.

The airline’s statement added: “What we need now is clarity and consistency from the government.

We understand that this is a fast-moving situation, however the information we are receiving is contradictory and often comes with little or no notice

“We want to provide customers, who work hard and save hard for their well-deserved holidays, with timely information and we need this from the government. We would like to sincerely thank our customers for their understanding and patience.”

Jet2 yesterday announced they had suspended flights to mainland Spain from the UK as of today.

The Leeds-Bradford Airport based airline are also suspending flights to and from Faro in Portugal.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office move came after Downing Street warned "no travel is risk-free" after a coronavirus quarantine requirement for people arriving in the UK from Spain was reintroduced.
