New data from Public Health England shows that the coronavirus infection rate in Wirral has fallen again.

The weekly government Covid-19 surveillance report says that for the seven days from July 15-21 (Week 30) the rate of infection per 100,000 people in the borough is 2.2 - down from 4.3 reported for the previous seven days (Week 29).

It means that there were approximately seven new cases of coronavirus confirmed in Wirral during the last seven-day period.

This figure is derived from combined data from both Pillar 1 and Pillar 2 of the government’s Covid-19 testing programme.

Pillar 1 is data from swab testing in PHE labs and NHS hospitals for those with a clinical need, and health and care workers.

Pillar 2 is data from swab testing for the wider population, as set out in government guidance.

Although the Week 29 data reported Wirral's rate of infection to be 4.3, this week's new report has increased that historical figure to 4.6, suggesting that there is some lag in reporting of infection cases.
