A KIND donation is set to keep a community food service in Winsford and Middlewich running.

What's For Tea has been feeding isolating residents and people with foodbank referrals during lockdown, with ready-to-cook meals and grocery boxes delivered to homes across the two towns.

And the project, run by the Hive Live, is set to go on thanks to the generous donation of £1,500 from Rod Hyde.

Rod won the cash from a data science competition run by Kaggle, part of Google, and donated his winnings to the Hive Live team.

Damon Horrill, from the Hive Live, said: "This kind donation is massively welcomed.

"It will help to fully sustain the project during the transition period and prevent many vulnerable people and families in our community from going hungry during that time."

Damon says the cash will help What's For Tea continue for at least another five weeks.

It currently costs around £200 a week to run, on top of the money that is brought in through the project.

Rod met Damon through the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.

He was awarded two prizes for producing methods of filtering medical papers to gather vital information in the battle against Covid-19.

Kaggle invited winners to donate their prizes to global coronavirus charities, but Rod decided to support What's For Tea.

He said: "I am delighted to donate my prize money to this great project.

"Damon and his colleagues are doing some amazing work and deserve all the support we can give them.”

What's For Tea is staffed completely by volunteers who have been delivering around 150 meals a week throughout lockdown and 1,500 meals in total, including hundreds of free meals to people with foodbank referrals.

Kitchen facilities have been donated by the Red Lion, while Cheshire West and Chester Council has provided a grant to purchase equipment and make a contribution to running costs.
