ONE of the UK’s major supermarket chains is seeking a local hero to support vulnerable people and good causes in Weaverham and Kingsley.

As part of its drive to support communities around its stores, the Co-op is searching for the right resident to help those in need while the pandemic continues and beyond.

The successful applicant will become a ‘member pioneer’ and will receive full training and support from the Co-op to help make a difference.

The paid role will cover a wide area, with Northwich Road in Weaverham at its heart, and the chosen person will be the latest part of a drive to recruit 1,000 pioneers across the country.

Existing pioneers are currently involved in a wide range of activities including co-ordinating food drives and offering personal support to those who may still be unable to leave their homes.

Leading the new nationwide recruitment drive, Russell Gill, head of co-operative and local engagement at Co-op said: “We’re looking for people who have the passion to bring communities together effectively, believe in the power of co-operation, and who hold the wellbeing of their community at the forefront of their mind, to truly make a difference.

“This has never been more important than recently.”

Earlier this year, the Co-op’s Community Wellbeing Index – which analyses data from postcodes across the country – identified that the area around Northwich Road in Weaverham performed well above the UK average for good, accessible and affordable education and learning opportunities.

Russell continued: “The local area has so many strengths and we want to help communities be as resilient as possible against new and existing challenges posed by Covid-19.

“The new pioneer should really spearhead our efforts, support great causes and think up new ideas.”

The role will involve 16 hours each month. To apply, visit jobs.coop.co.uk/member-pioneers
