A MAN arrested in connection with a serious assault has been released by police, with the victim in a critical condition.

The 24-year-old suspect was held after an ‘altercation between two men’ at Screwfix on Gateway 49 Trade Park in Bewsey shortly after 10am yesterday, Thursday.

Cheshire Police have now confirmed that he has since been released pending further enquiries by detectives.

Meanwhile, the victim is in a critical but stable condition after he was rushed to Aintree Hospital.

He suffered serious injuries and is understood to be in a coma, with an air ambulance having been called to the scene.

A force spokesman said this afternoon: “The 24-year-old man has been released on conditional police bail pending further enquiries.

“The victim remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.”

Police cordons remained in place at the scene on Kerfoot Street into yesterday afternoon, with a forensics tent having been set up outside the store – which was shut following the incident.

Detective sergeant Candice Sivori earlier said: “I would like to reassure the local community that this appears an isolated incident.

“We have an increased police presence in the area to provide reassurance, and I would urge anyone with any concerns to speak to an officer.

“While we have made an arrest, we are continuing to appeal for information from the public.

“We’re keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone with any information which may assist with our investigation.
