THE leader of St Helens Borough Council has urged ecstatic Liverpool fans to act responsibly as they celebrate winning the Premier League title.

Cllr David Baines joined thousands of Reds last night in celebrating Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side finally clinching the title, which was delivered on a plate by Chelsea following their 2-1 victory over Manchester City.

The Labour council leader, who also celebrated turning 41 yesterday, is an ardent Liverpool fan and is regularly seen cheering on his beloved Reds at Anfield.

Following last night’s result, thousands of fans descended outside the club’s stadium to celebrate clinching their first league title in 30 years.

Liverpool fans are expected to continue partying over the weekend, but Cllr Baines said Reds must be mindful that we are still in the midst of a pandemic.

Cllr Baines said: “The last few months have been exceptionally tough, and all of us have made sacrifices for the common good.

“Sport was one of those sacrifices, and while I appreciate it’s not important to everyone, it is inescapably true that it means a huge amount to many people.

“Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp put it well when he said it’s the most important of the least important things.

“The safe return of top-flight football, and hopefully soon rugby league, is a sign of some ‘normality’ and it’s unquestionably a boost for lots of us.

“As a Liverpool fan I’m absolutely ecstatic that we’ve won the league and like every other Red I want to get out and celebrate.

“It would be great to do that, but we’ve got to bear in mind that COVID hasn’t disappeared and we’ve still got to be responsible.

“We’ll be able to celebrate properly soon, together.

“Until then – whether you’re celebrating the league title or just making the most of the nice weather – please be safe and follow the latest guidelines.”
