AN air cadet from Northwich has been named as the best female in the Air Training Corps ahead of thousands of others across the country.

Cadet warrant officer Samantha Dutton, of 146 Northwich Squadron, received the prestigious accolade when the results were announced at The Royal Air Force Air Cadets’ annual national awards competition.

Samantha has been an air cadet since May 2015 and has been involved in all areas of training available to young people, including flying, adventure training, leadership, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and events contributing to the local community.

Nominations were interviewed virtually ‘Dragons’ Den-style’, and after impressing a panel of esteemed judges, Samantha came out on top and is to be awarded the ATC 75 sword.

A formal presentation ceremony is due to take place in due course.

Samantha is well known within Merseyside Wing Air Cadets for her sporting, first aid and musical talents.

She is always well respected, friendly, helpful and willing to assist other cadets to develop further.

She also continues to parade weekly in Northwich, despite now studying at the University of Liverpool.

Judges said that her commitment and willingness to provide support across the wing meant that there was no hesitation in recommending that she be selected for the honour.

On behalf of Merseyside Wing, wing commander Joe O’Riley said: “It was fantastic to be informed that CWO Dutton is this year’s ATC 75 sword winner.

“This award could not have gone to a more exemplary and deserving cadet.

“She epitomises everything we expect our cadets to be and is a great role model for her fellow cadets, members of staff and the organisation as a whole.

“I am so proud of what she has achieved and the fact that she has made Merseyside Wing history by winning this prestigious award.”

Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty CBE, who was a member of the interview panel, said of those who were nominated: “They all give so much back to the RAF Air Cadets, mentoring and instructing younger cadets and supporting our hard-working adult volunteers.

“They are the best of British youth and I could not be prouder of them.”

The Royal Air Force Air Cadets is open to all young people aged between 12 and 18.
