Woolston Rovers launch NHS shirt in memory of Joselito Habab

Known as Jo, the 46-year-old worked at the Lovely Lane site for 18 years.

The dad, who trained as a nurse in his native Philippines before moving the UK, died last month after contracting the coronavirus.

Now Woolston Rovers have released a new rugby shirt and basketball-style training vest, the proceeds of which will go towards a fund set up in Mr Habab’s memory – which has so far raised more than £10,000.

A spokesman for the club said: “Woolston Rovers will be releasing an NHS-themed training vest in partnership with their kit provider O’Neills now that sportswear production has recommenced following its brilliant response to the PPE demand caused by Covid-19.

“We are also immensely proud to announce that, following discussions with staff at Warrington Hospital, all of the profits raised through the sale of these shirts and vests will go directly to the fund set up in memory of Joselito Habab.

“The much loved and respected NHS nurse based at Warrington Hospital recently became the first member of staff to sadly pass away after he lost his battle with Covid-19.

“Please support this fabulous cause in memory of a very dedicated and caring NHS hero.”

Liam Horrigan at Rovers came up with the idea for the shirts following discussions with hospital staff.

He said: “All at Woolston Rovers are more than happy to do what we can to recognise a real hero.”

Rylands Sharks have also produced a shirt for the NHS, with funds also being split with mental health charities Man Talk Warrington and Young Minds.

A club spokesman added: “In a homage to the sterling work currently being undertaken by the NHS during these difficult and challenging times, the chance to do our bit to help the cause was one that we as a club wanted to make sure we grabbed with both hands.

“We also wanted to ensure we could support some charities a little closer to home, and with that in mind we will be splitting the profits from the shirt with Man Talk Warrington and Young Minds.

“Following recent sad events, the club want to ensure we are doing all we can do continue to break down any stigma associated with mental health.

“The selection of charities, which are either local or have specific target areas around the majority of our playing group and spectators, is one which we hope can help make a real difference.”

Woolston Rovers’ vest and shirt are priced at £22 for kids or £25 or adults.
